Concerto Biosciences

At Concerto Biosciences, we are obsessed with microbes. We dream of a healthier world where microbial ecology enables advanced medicines and environmentally-conscious agricultural practices. To unlock microbial ecology, Concerto uses a novel platform technology from MIT to construct and observe millions of microbial cocultures in parallel—each its own tiny universe of possibilities. Our technology generates a totally new type of microbiome data that allows us to identify groups of microbes that perform beneficial functions. We call these groups “ensembles”. We are currently in the preclinical stage for our first product, an ensemble to treat eczema—a chronic, irritating, and psychologically stressful skin disease that affects over two hundred million people. Our goal is to discover the first-ever treatment that provides totally safe, sustained relief for eczema patients. Beyond eczema, Concerto’s platform unlocks opportunities for new products across industries. In partnership with biotech, pharma, and agriculture companies, Concerto will develop a multitude of ensembles that solve the world’s greatest challenges in human health, food production, and bioremediation. The Concerto team is our most important ensemble. We believe the best human ensembles, much like microbial ensembles, are diverse—composed of individuals with different backgrounds, cultures, genders, and beliefs. We are committed to building a company where you belong and where your voice is heard.

Role Description

As the first full-time member of Concerto’s business development (BD) team, you’ll lay the operational, strategic, and cultural foundation for BD at a growing startup. Through market research and external meetings, you’ll test and refine Concerto’s hypotheses about creating value through partnerships, and you’ll work closely with Concerto’s CEO and CBO to update Concerto’s BD strategy based on learnings from your work. You’ll grow with Concerto, expanding your personal network as you build inroads for Concerto in new industries, and advancing within the company by taking on additional responsibilities over time. As an early member of Concerto’s expanding team, you’ll play a critical role in developing Concerto’s culture and translating our core values into practice.

Responsibilities

  • Be the heartbeat of Concerto’s BD activities by driving internal and external meetings, tracking systems, communication norms, or other practices/resources as needed
  • Systematically map and prioritize BD opportunities available to Concerto, including partnership landscapes, competitive landscapes, and target partner profiles within target industries
  • Pressure-test Concerto’s BD strategy by building new connections with potential partners across a variety of sectors (pharma, consumer, agriculture, etc.)
  • Compile trends and learnings from BD activities to (a) refine Concerto’s BD strategy in collaboration with Concerto’s executive team, and (b) inform Concerto’s scientific leadership as they refine Concerto’s technology development strategy to respond to the “pull” of potential partners
  • Keep clear, robust records of BD activities that allow longitudinal learning, continuity in external relationships, and ongoing, quantitative analysis of progress toward BD milestones
  • Leverage your technical training to accurately represent Concerto’s technology to external parties, make high-level assessments of mutual fit between potential partners and Concerto, and gather early feedback on Concerto’s capabilities from potential partners
  • Convert new and existing connections with potential partners into valuable partnerships
  • Embody Concerto’s core values in your work

Required Qualifications

  • MS/PhD in a STEM field, or equivalent scientific/technical experience
  • 1+ years experience in a business function (e.g., consulting, business development, etc.)
  • Clear, organized, and nuanced communication skills (oral, written, and visual)
  • Demonstrated ability to span strategy creation and execution (comfortable translating between the “30,000-foot view” and “the weeds”)
  • Fast learner; ability to rapidly integrate new information across science and business

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building quantitative business models, especially applied to platform companies
